I’m SO fortunate to have come across Lyonsleaf’s products!
I connected with them after Vicky from Lyonsleaf read my personal story (after finding me on Twitter). We both share the same passion of using high quality products and ingredients to help eczema naturally get better.
When I read their bio, I absolutely fell in love with their products!
They feel that although modern medicine is amazing, the enthusiasm for it has become unbalanced and modern solutions are often unnecessarily harsh with unwelcome side effects (like with hydro-cortisone and steroid creams). And as such, they’ve found a wonderful natural solution to helping people with their eczema.
Their products are grown by themselves as much as possible (how often do you get that nowadays?!), which is why they choose natural products that have been unrefined and unprocessed. What this means for you – is that the creams and products you’re placing will retain their ultimate nutrients so that your skin can grow, heal, and repair itself.
Here are the ingredients for the Healing Calendula Cream: prunus amygdalus dulcis [cold pressed almond oil] • butyrospermum parkii [organic shea butter] • prunus americana [cold pressed apricot kernel oil] •calendula officinalis • [calendula flower extract] • borogo officinalis [cold pressed borage oil] • tocopherol [vitamin E oil] • juniperus communis [juniper essential oil] • boswellia serrata [frankincense essential oil] • lavendula angustifiolia [lavender essential oil] •pelargonium graveolens [geranium essential oil]
note: the essential oils naturally contain: citral, citronellol, eugenol, geraniol, limonene, linolool
They also opt for recipes which don’t require harsh preservatives and emulsifiers (and they never use artificial colour or fragrance).
I found that the texture of the Calendula Cream looks really thick at first. But surprisingly, when you start rubbing it onto your skin, it’s so soft, and it just melts in your skin into a liquid texture! It’s really wonderous 😀 I love the smooth texture of it perhaps more than any other balm that I’ve tried (which is a big statement – because I’ve tried many products before!).
Another great unique thing about Lyonsleaf Calendula Cream that differentiates them from other products is that their products are unique in the fact that they are made without water (which is pretty amazing, given that most beauty products state ‘water’ or ‘aqua’ as the first or second ingredient on a label!).
What’s the advantage of using a waterless formula?
Using a waterless formula means that the products can be created without the need for any harsh chemicals, as these usually cause irritation and breakouts to the skin (as they’re added to stop bacteria from forming in the water). With a waterless formula, this will reduce irritation and breakouts to the skin and eczema. For more information, you can read their Oil Based Moisturisers page
I found that although the Lyonsleaf Calendula Cream didn’t have any fragrances, it still has a strong smell. I think the smell is a bit on the stronger side for my personal preferences – but some may not mind it. 🙂 It’s unisex herbal scent (created only with the essential oils).
If you’ve read my other blog post on what the Best Moisturizers for Eczema are, you’ll know that I mentioned Calendula creams are one of the best for healing eczema (given that the ingredients are entirely clean!). It benefits eczema by reducing inflammation, eliminating bacteria, and helping the skin heal. It will also bolster and repair breaks in the skins natural lipid barrier (the stratum corneum), which will prevent the invasion of allergens and pathogens that cause flare ups.
It is also rich in antibacterial and immunostimulant properties to treat wounds, stimulate collagen production, and minimize scarring as well!
(Pssst – The calendula ingredient in it is so rich in antioxidants that it is possibly the oldest anti ageing treatment in the world. I also love how Lyonsleaf grows, picks and dries the flowers to use them to infuse their Calendula-based products.)
All of the ingredients are non-comedogenic (non pore blocking) so it is suitable for dry or oily skin.
“Calendula is a powerful natural anti-inflammatory which promotes healing and cell regeneration without side effects.”
I find that a little goes a long way for this cream. It may look like a small jar – but it takes a while to finish (despite that I constantly moisturize my dry skin). I’ve also been using steam on my face lately and I find that after I apply this, my skin feels so soft and smooth!
Unlike petroleum jelly or other synthetic emollients (made from petrochemicals), the oils used in this balm will not dry out the skin even more, and it will also allow your skin and eczema to ‘breathe.’
It’s also packed full of nourishing ingredients such as Cold-Pressed Almond Oil (which is rich in antioxidant vitamins A, D and E as well as vitamins B1, B2, B6. It is less greasy than many oils and easily absorbed by your skin and is of great benefit to the skin’s natural lipid barrier. It also contains kaempferol – a powerful antioxidant, and quercetin – a flavanoid used to treat eczema. They only use cold pressed Almond Oil as it retains all of it’s therapeutic value.)
How much does this eczema balm retail for?
Lyonsleaf is amazing and actually based in the UK! This handmade product retails for approximately £14.95 (approx $20 USD), which is completely worth it because of the other reviews from people who have gotten better after using it. It might seem far (if you live in the US, Asia or Canada) to order something all the way in the UK, but they actually sent me their product all the way from UK to Canada and it did not take too long!
Also, shipping outside of Europe is only approximately £7.26 (around $11USD), so it’s not too expensive. I would say this product is definitely worth a try, especially if you’ve never tried handmade products especially formulated for eczema 🙂
Check out their website for other great products if you have a chance!
