I was recently given the opportunity to review a product called Seabuckthorn Eczema & Dermatitis Soothing Salve. Please note – I was not paid to write this review and I hope that it can be a genuine review for all of you.
When I first got the soothing salve, I was really excited because I used to regularly use the Seabuckthorn Seed Oil product before (from the same company), which I heard so many amazing reviews about – and it wasn’t cheap either!.
What I love about this product is that it’s ingredients are SO pure! (and I’m a huge fan of natural products for eczema.)
Here are the ingredients: Coconut Oil, Beeswax, Certified Sustainable Palm Oil, Organic SBT Seabuckthorn Seed Oil, Organic SBT Seabuckthorn Fruit Oil, Chamomile Oil, Pomegranate Oil, Rosehip Oil, Helichrysum Oil, Rosewood Oil
Aren’t the ingredients wonderful!? It’s completely free of chemicals and harsh ingredients – which means it contains just natural healing oils to help your eczema. Here are some of the healing properties of the oils in the eczema soothing salve:
This is a very popular and active ingredient in anti-aging, medicinal skin care products, and supplements. It’s often used to promote the healing of eczema and skin injuries (including burns, sores, wounds), and conditions of the mucous membranes (including ulcers and lesions). Since high nutrient content is essential for the metabolism of skin cells, Seabuckthorn oil helps eczema, helps fight wrinkles, and combats dryness and symptoms of premature aging skin.
When eaten as a food, the Seabuckthorn Berry provides 10 TIMES more Vitamin C than oranges! It’s the 3rd highest source of Vitamin E in the plant world. This superfood berry has anti-inflammatory properties and a high omega fat content including 3, 6, 9 and the rare 7 to help heal eczema.
FUN FACT: The Sea buckthorn oil was used to heal burn victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
Coconut oil is another ingredient found in the Seabuckthorn Eczema Soothing Salve. There’s so much hype about coconut oil these days. But how does coconut oil help eczema? It moisturizes the skin, and it also contains Caprylic Acid and Lauric Acid, which have antiviral, antimicrobial, antiprotozoal and antifungal properties. These are effective in disrupting the lipid membranes in organisms (like fungus, bacteria and viruses) and destroying them.
Another ingredient in the Soothing Salve is the Helichrysum oil. Dr. Oz recently talked about this Helichrysum oil, which is a flower which produces an essential oil known to have great skin rejuvenating, anti-inflammatory and cell-regenerative properties. It has healing properties that help reduce free-radical oxidative damage, stimulate cell regeneration, reduce the appearance of scars, stretch marks, and eczema, as well as tone and tighten skin that has reduced elasticity.
The other ingredients in this Seabuckthorn Eczema Soothing Salve include Rosehip Oil and Pomegranate Oil which help to restore softness and suppleness to dry, scaly patches. The Chamomile Oil also helps to calm the uncomfortable itching that accompanies Eczema and Dermatitis.
When you first open the product, it’s almost like an orange balm. I didn’t find the smell to be the most pleasant (although I’ve heard some people comment that they like the smell!), so it might take some getting used to. But the texture of the balm easily slides onto your skin (and doesn’t leave an orange mark :).
I found that the Seabuckthorn Eczema & Dermatitis Soothing Salve also looks really thick, but once you apply it to your skin it’s not as thick as it looks and feels. Unlike other creams like shea butter, this balm feels less heavy and less thick, so some eczema sufferers may not find it as moisturizing. Like other creams, you may also have to use it for a few weeks in order to see a difference.
Here’s a chart I found on the SBT Seabuckthorn website:
As I’ve mentioned before with moisturizers and creams for eczema, every balm will work differently on each person. Eczema is so individualized that you’ll need to find the right moisturizer for you; I’ve heard of amazing testimonies where this balm has helped eczema sufferers stop itching and really heal their skin, but I’ve also heard of stories where it didn’t help others with the itching.
